(Updated) Intuition is good, reading is better! + 1 Game Review
( i'm not a english native speaker, so please excuse some mistakes and maybe awkward formulations)
So what`s going on lately in my go live?
I started again to play frequently at KGS, for some time rated as a 4 Kyu, now back to 5 kyu. But that`s fine, i think 4 kyu was highly overrated... i won some fast games by luck.
So... i`m still not very good at Life and Death, which, in my oppinion, is training the "key ability" in go: reading out possible variations. Your intuition, your sense for the fuseki or for the strategy can be good, but without the possibility to really read out, more or less, long sequences, espacially L&D your will be soon lost in go and make no further progress.
I use to not see this clearly, i thought
"i`m so bad at soving L & D and it is soo boring, i will just play more games and become better at l&d naturally" ... but this does not work (at least for me) and so i started to push my self to do some problems every day. I still have my problems with them, sometimes thinking 5 minutes or more over a problem labled as "10 kyu" :-D
But even with life & death i have my good moments, and i`m very passionate to get better at it. When i`m not playing or reviewing my own games, my main study object, at the moment, is solving L&D and reading books about it. There are a lot of fine books about this topic, for example "Key Concepts of live and Death" or "Life and Death Problems" by Robert Jasiek. And suddenly, after i acepted the need to learn l&d, it started to become a bit more fun than before.
And as i mentioned in a earlier update recently i tried out the "solving in the mind" tsumego technique.
Somehow i forgot to go on whith this in the last few days, but i will start again from now on.
And there was a first sucess allready, i managed to visualize and solve one problem 100% in my mind, that was a great experience. You should try this as well!
In the mean time i did not play many long games at KGS, even while i think i`m a bit better when i play long games. In my every day life i`m a bit slow as well... and even in school i almost never finished my exams right in time hahah :D
To play fast games often has many benefits, it helps to learn basic things very fast... after each game you can check the joseki and fuseki, and so learn new things fast. When you play a 2 hours game, it is a bit more complicated to not feel sorry if you play a somehow "stupid" move. Fast games can be taken easy and are fun too. (I`m not talking about lightning/blitz games here, these are fun as well, but i think you do not learn much appart from strenghtening your intuition, which is of course important too.)
Last year, before our daughter was born, i remember how important it was for me to draw a line between fast / long games ... to somehow say
"no this was just a fast game, i`m much stronger when i play serious..."
But i learned that the game should allways be played serious, and that how you manage the time limit, on which both players agreed on, is a important part of ones own "strength". But of course, i still think, that the true beauty of go evolves when playing long games... even when i see more benefit in playing much faster games...
In order to, besides that, enjoy a lot of long and slow games as well i play a lot at DGS at the moment... maybe too many games :-) and because i started soooo many games i tend to play fast at DGS as well... hahahaha :D
But i was playing a few long games at kgs and espacially two of them i want to share today.
The one with much comments by myself was when i played as 4 kyu against another 4 kyu.
The other one was a long awaited game with BenGoZen, i think you all know his wonderfull Go blog! http://www.bengozen.com/
It was a great pleasure to play such a long and interesting game. Before we played the game i allready started with the review of the other long game, so the game against BenGoZen is not yet reviewed.
Finally one more random thing:
As i allways tend to hang arround a lot on twitter, i was posting a tweet
"Intuition is good, reading is better. #key #Go #baduk #weiqi"
and @igoPau replied
“there should be a meme "why not both" with your tweet ;)"
soo i quickly made my first, and as far as planed ONLY go meme ever (I`m not really a big meme fan, but in this situation i could not resist =)
Maybe you enjoy the following review of a very long game i played as 4 kyu vs. a other 4 kyu, i won with a very small margin of 5,50 as white... and i think it was a interesting game. Please leave comments on your thoughts :-)
The Sakata Eio - Go Seigen game is given here as well because i mention this game in my review.
So... next here is the game i played with/against :) BenGoZen ... enjoy!
“You should look at the board and play wherever you want to. This is the way to get stronger.” Takemiya Masaki

Why Do You Play Go?!
Recentyl i was writing this tweet
and got some interesting replies which i want to share here!
(some people send their answers after the post was published, feel free to send me your answers via Twitter or the comment section, i will add them as well)
Nate was sending a good one via the comment section of this post:
"I play go because it's beautiful, difficult, and provides a long, steady path of discrete rewards and challenges."

Follow Up Post / Tengen & 3 San Sans
I got some interesting feedback to the game in the previous post.
@iGoPau from the iGoPau Go Club in France ( https://www.facebook.com/iGo.Pau) was so kind to write some comments in the SGF file. The new comments from @iGoPau are always beginning with "hq:"
@LevelOneDev was sharing a wonderfull youtube video lesson of @GoDwyrin "Bat" about this tengen+san san fuseki.
Thank`s a lot to both of you for this very usefull feedback!

Game Review / Tengen & 3 San-Sans
Hi there, today just a very quick and dirty game review of one kind of unique game. I was white and my opponent started with tengen... everytime i played 4/4 he invaded san-san... how would you have played?

Tsumego everywhere
It's been a while, when i was reading at the 19x19 Go forum in a post from John Fairbairn ( here is the post, some of you will allready know it: lifein19x19.com ) about a "new" or just very usefull method to solve tsumego aka. life and death problems.
To make a long story short: the advice here is to, first, remember and visualize the problem and than, second, to solve it only in your mind without any visual reference.
IYou should begin with very (very) easy positions and go on to more complex after you were able to solve the problem 100% without looking at a board&stones or a page with a printed problem or whatever...
You can do this in a lot of moments during your every day life where usually study tsumego is not possible... for example while washing the dishes.
Back when i first read about this technique my thought was "ok, good idea but i will never be able to do this, i will not even try this"
... but yesterday i somehow managed to, no — not to solve yet, but, as a first step, to memorize a position clearly in my mind.
That was a very exciting feeling... and i will try to continue today solving the problem.
It seems like a great method to improve reading, and it is fun! You should try yourself.
I think there may be 4 phases with this:
1. trying to visualize the position (remember start with very small and simple problems!)
2. beeing to able to visualize clearly
3. trying to solve
4. actually beeing able to solve the problem and doing it again with a bit more complex problem.
I'm in phase 3 :)
Good luck with trying this out and don't think you can't do it, you can! ;-)

"Truth & Go" - about this blog
(Because i changed and added some content on the "About me & truth and go" page of this blog, i decided to post it here as a new update.)
I play Go since 2008 soon after seeing the movie "PI", in which one can find 2 Go related scenes, i joined the Go club in Hamburg (Germany) and became a enthusiastic player.
Also i only make slow progress, Go became a very important part of my life.
If i would have to pick 4 Go players i highly admire i would say:
Go Seigen, Honinbo Shuei, O Meien and Lee Sedol.
Mostly this decision comes not out of a deep understanding of their style, it´s a rather personal thing, i just feel sympathy for them, and somehow it came that i read in books about or from them.
Sometimes loosing one game after the other frustrates me ... than i feel how complex and hard to master this game is and doubt that i can become much stronger one day ... but playing, even if you loose, can be so much joy that i will never stop!
It fascinats me deeply how Go can be related to Asian philosophy like Taoism (Ying & Yang), Buddhism (Emptyness/dependent arising) and Confucianism (developing of virtue/modesty). I think while learning Go we can learn a lot about ourselves.
On this Blog i present mostly reviews of my own games as well
as some rather random things about Go that are comming through my mind, internet findings like Go pictures or Go videos, thoughts about Go philosophy etc. I don`t have neither time nor ability to write complex essays and high class reviews on a regular basis, thats why the subtitle of this blog is "random stuff about go"... so don`t expect to much. :-D
Why am i writing in English? I love to write in english because it is a nice feeling that by using english one can connect with Go players all over the world ... but i`m not a native speaker and my abilities to write in english are not very good ...

Dark, yet clear as a kyu player
Hi again internet go baduk weiqi world!
After some break because of the birth of our daughter, i`m back. I don`t know how much i will keep this blog updated, but it feels wrong to play and study again without blogging again, i think it just became a habit.
Here a game with relativ detailed comments in it, hope you will enjoy and if you find any mistakes, or if you have other views, opinions etc. please let me know.
I`m also planing to review some pro games in the future, not to teach somebody, just to share my studies! The focus here is of course totally different than for example at gogameguru, where you get professional reviews ... i`m just a kyu player and if you read my comments you should not see them as absolute but just as thoughts of a kyu player, not a teacher - but actually that goes without saying.
Maybe together we can develop a better understanding of the game, that would be nice!
Ah, and for those who don`t know me at all allready, please excuse me if i will sometimes write strange english, i`m not a native speaker.
And in case you did not see it allready, i started a second twitter account, i use it just 100% as a study journal (= @badukJournal ) ... maybe it inspires you, i hope so, for me it is a good way to track my progress and to develop motivation.
Mhmm, nothing much more to say... maybe just a few go related random things:
- Still waiting (sometimes praying) for the mac version of Smartgo
- When i have time to study i do tsumego 90% of the time, i start to love tsumego, even sometimes when i`m too tired to even solve the easy ones :-)
- I bought a fan with a Go Seigen calligraphy from the hebsacker verlag.
Here is a picture:
John Fairbarn writes at 19x19 that the meaning is this:
"Dark, yet clear as day". This is from the Confucian "Doctrine of the Golden Mean", and it is a metaphorical description of the perfect gentleman: dark on the surface, bright inside: "a gentleman has no adornment outside but is cultivated inside".
and i wonder if that maybe is in this case not (only) about the gentlemens qualities but about the qualities of Go Seigens moves?! ... not many people were able to understand them immediately, but he saw the possible variations "clear as day"
- i sadly recognised that "Go World" has published it`s last issue
- this Lee Sedol - Gu Li Jubango is amazing... i would like to see Lee Sedol win :-D Have nice game ... and day ;-)

“Competition and faith are my life-long vocations. Like water and fire, I depend on both. When I couldn’t outrank the others, it was time for me to leave. There are two things in my life, truth and Go.” Go Seigen
- this Lee Sedol - Gu Li Jubango is amazing... i would like to see Lee Sedol win :-D Have nice game ... and day ;-)

The "thinking game" and the "feeling game"
So far it works fine with having 2 accounts, one for short games in between and one for long serious games.
But often i found my self playing fast (and sometimes stupid) moves even when i still have long thinking time.
This has to do something with my personality and it makes a good example on how you can learn about your self - and maybe work on some bad habbits- through playing Go!
Sometimes it feels to me like that there are 2 different games ... the one where you can follow your intuition, where you "feel" your next move and ... the one where you really think through variations and possible answers of your opponent. But there aren`t 2 games!
There are, even in games with long thinking time, a lot of situations where you can`t think it through, go allways has both aspects... the right brain thing and the left brain thing! :-)
This reminds me of a book i once read "Zone Press Park" from O Meien ... he talks about finite and non-finite Go.
Here a quote from Senseis Library
O Meien discusses the concepts he calls "infinite" vs. "finite" go. A position in go is "finite" if it's possible for the player to find the best move through reading. It's when the game is constrained and the possibilities are limited. It is clear he doesn't like this, and his technique of the "zone press" (a term borrowed from Japanese soccer) is designed to avoid it, and push the game into a state he calls "infinite," meaning a position where it is not clear to either player what the best move is, but there is nevertheless a pressure for his opponent to do something to reduce the dominance of his "number one zone", which is the area with the most potential on the board.
Howsoever... i think i make good progress and the most important thing:
i enjoy playing again very much. And few weeks ago i realised something very very simple and very very important:
I have to be good at solving Life&Death problems in order to become a stronger player one day!
It is that simple and you can read about this in many books or on the internet ... and go teachers will point out as well ... but when i remeber a few months ago i really did not like to solve L&D ... i hate it because i was not good at it. But as soon as i fully accepted that in order to become a dan player one day ... i have to incrase my reading ability somehow ... i started to see solving L&D as a challenge to overcome myself and to learn how to fully concentrate.
There are only 3 possibilities:
1. Learn how to solve hard L&D and (maybe!)
become a dan player one day.
2. Don`t learn and stay a kgs 6 kyu.
3. Don`t learn and stop playing.
By the way i will not continue with posting every long game here... but some of them.
I`m sorry if my english is not very good :-)
Have a nice game!

Much thinking time, big loss
Even while i like quotes about not taking too much care about winning or loosing, i`m a bit sad that i lost this game. I wrote some comments and variations in the game. Maybe you enjoy! Please leave your comments about the game, i`m curious if you have any advice how to develop my go!

What about english Go-Tv Channel!?
Imagine there would be regular Go-programms on (english) TV!?
Found this on youtube and found it quite amusing to hear with what they come up to fill the time.
They did not have the opportunity to do analysis on a extra board like in Korean and Japan tv and soo they do a lot of "small talk".
